Sunday 22nd September, 7.30pm with Professor Paul Mealor
Established in 2011 by Robert and Jonathan Guy, the NEW Sinfonia is an orchestra based in North Wales that provides work for outstanding, gifted, professional young musicians. Our core team of players come from across North Wales and beyond. Our team can boast that as well as having studied in some of the world’s leading music conservatoires, we have also performed in some of the best known international orchestras and festivals. NEW Sinfonia performed at the North Wales International Music Festival last year, collaborating with Karl Jenkins and Nicholas Cleobury.
The orchestra is deeply committed to inspiring the next generation of young musicians from North Wales. Last year the NEW Shoots programme was launched; an initiative giving 10 musicians still in schools across North Wales the opportunity to sit alongside our own 16 professional players in a mentoring scheme. This was a huge success and will be developed as the young players greatly valued and loved the experience. Aiming to consolidate and develop the musicians reputation internationally, the NEW Sinfonia aims to become North Wales’ very own professional orchestra.
“A talented and enthusiastic group of musicians, full of youthful verve and ambition. They deserve success and support for bringing an orchestra of this quality to their part of Wales. They are well run and have much to offer in Wales and beyond. I am delighted to be associated with them”.
Born in Wrexham North Wales, Robert is Artistic Director and co-founder of NEW Sinfonia, Principal Conductor to the Orchestra of Square Chapel and Musical Director of Cantorion Rhos Choir. For the summer period, he was appointed Assistant Conductor to the exciting and innovative contemporary group ‘Size Zero Opera’, who performed at the Tête-à-Tête Opera Festival, as well as Assistant Conductor to Co Opera Company in London. In September, Robert was invited to participate at the ‘International Masterclasses Berlin’, where he worked work with Michail Jurowski and the Berlin Sinfonietta. Last year, he was selected to study with Maestro Benjamin Zander of the Boston Philharmonic at the 2012 London Master Classes, and in 2011 he was awarded the Orion Young Conductor’s Award, supported by the Richard Carne Trust. He holds the MMus and FRSM qualifications, having studied at the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music.
